SEATTLE MARINERS

Mariners Talk: An insider perspective on M’s pitchers from the farm to MLB

Nov 26, 2019, 4:09 PM | Updated: 4:20 pm

We covered the Mariners’ approach to developing pitching last week. Now it’s time to get specific.

Takeaways: What we learned from M’s talk with Brian DeLunas

The second part of Shannon Drayer and James “Boy Howdy” Osborn’s Mariners Talk interview with Seattle bullpen coach and former team director of pitching development and strategies Brian DeLunas is now live, which you can watch in the embedded video in this post.

While part 1 of the video (which you can watch here) was more about the way the M’s and the rest of baseball now approaches pitching, including thoughts on the technology the game uses and what certain terminology means, part 2 gets more into exactly how the Mariners have worked with their own pitchers. That means that in the new video, you’ll get to hear (and see) DeLunas’ insider perspective on top Mariners starting pitcher Marco Gonzales and fellow left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, as well as the up-and-coming Justus Sheffield, 2018 M’s first-round draft pick Logan Gilbert and some surprises from the farm system.

There’s more to this episode of Mariners Talk, however.

Because the M’s have made several moves this week, Drayer has a quick segment at the beginning taking stock of the signings of Evan White, Seattle’s 2017 first-round pick who received an interesting long-term deal, and Kendall Graveman, a starting pitcher Seattle hopes will have a bounce-back year following Tommy John surgery.
